Gretchen spoke to the lead prosecutor in the case, Jeffrey Ashton, on comments made by juror Jennifer Ford about how the lack of evidence on Caylee's cause of death prevented a murder conviction. Ashton said, "When we look at the photographs of how Caylee was found and the evidence, we saw something, obviously the jurors didn't see it." He added that though most people didn't have an opportunity to reveal the unblurred photographs, "they said something to me." As for the cause of death, Ashton said the coroner was limited in what she could say medically beyond the fact that Caylee's death was a homicide. He said that "medically you couldn't tell that the tape killed her, because the tape wasn't on flesh, but that doesn't mean that by putting the pieces together, you couldn't come to that conclusion - the jury didn't." Ashton called the criticism that the prosecution overreached in the charges against Casey "ridiculous," and that the jury was able to opt for lesser offenses, all the way down to manslaughter. He said, "If our theory of what happened was correct, than it was first degree murder, and we honestly believed that it was." Ashton also responded to questions about his courtroom demeanor, especially in regard to Jose Baez's closing arguments.
